    Story Behind the Song
I met an homeless veteran from the same Marine unit that I served with in 'Nam. He was begging on the street. I took him to eat and he told me his story and I realized that had a few things worked out differently in my life, I could very well be where he is now. I wrote a song about it, and this is it.

    Lyrics
WHERE HAVE ALL THE HEROES GONE?
(WORDS AND MUSIC BY JOEL CLYDE BROTHERS)

HE CAME HOME A HERO FROM VIETNAM.
HE DID HIS DUTY FOR UNCLE SAM.
WON A PURPLE HEART FOR THAT SCAR ON HIS KNEE,
AND HE WORE A WHOLE LOT MORE THAT NOBODY COULD SEE.

JUST A BOY OF EIGHTEEN WHO ONCE WORKED AT THE MILL
THEY GAVE HIM A RIFLE, AND IT WAS "KILL OR BE KILLED."
FIFTEEN MONTHS IN THE JUNGLE FIGHTING VIET CONG.
NO TIME TO WONDER IS IT RIGHT OR ARE WE WRONG.

WHERE HAVE ALL THE HEROES GONE?
DID THEY RIDE OFF INTO THE SUN.
I GUESS BEING A HEROES NOT REALLY MUCH FUN,
WHEN THE FIGHTING IS OVER BUT THE HEALING'S NOT DONE.

HE CAME HOME AND MARRIED HIS HIGH-SCHOOL SWEETHEART.
A FEW SHORT YEARS LATER, HIS WORLD CAME APART.
SHE COULDN'T TEAR APART THE WALL THAT HE'D BUILT,
TO SHUT OUT THE NIGHTMARES AND FEELINGS OF GUILT.

SOMETIMES AT NIGHT WHEN HE'D LAY DOWN IN BED,
HE DREAMED OF SCREAMS, EXPLOSIONS AND THE DEAD.
AND THE HURT ALL CAME BACK THAT HE HID DEEP INSIDE
THEN HE'D WAKE UP WITH A SCREAM, AND HANG HIS HEAD AND CRY.

WHERE HAVE ALL THE HEROES GONE?
DIDTHEY RIDE OFF INTO THE SUN?
I GUESS BEING A HEROES NOT REALLY MUCH FUN.
WHEN THE FIGHTINGS ALL OVER BUT THE HEALINGS NOT DONE.

TWENTY YEARS LATER, TIME'S TOOK IT'S TOLL.
NOW, HIS BEST FREIND'S A BOTTLE AND HIS SANITY'S ON HOLD.
HE JUST HAUNTS THE GRAVEYARDS TALKING TO THE STONES
OF THE ONES WHO DIED FIGHTING SO FAR FROM HOME.

NOW, THE PEOPLE AROUND TOWN TALK ABOUT HIM A LOT.
BUT THEY NEVER MENTION THE WAR THAT HE'D FOUGHT.
THEY JUST SAY HE'S CRAZY, A FOOL AND A BUM.
THE FIGHTING'S ALL OVER, BUT THE WAR'S NEVER DONE.

WHERE HAVE ALL THE HEROES GONE?
DID THEY RIDE OFF INTO THE SUN?
BEING A HERO IS NOT REALLY MUCH FUN.
WHEN THE FIGHTINGS ALL OVER BUT THE HEALINGS NOT DONE.
WHEN THE FIGHTINGS ALL OVER BUT THE HEALINGS NOT DONE.
