"...it's like the sun shining on me, you beautiful thing..." |

Story Behind the Song
I wrote this song after watching the movie, Beautiful Thing. All the Mama Cass songs got to me.
The original version of this song is bright and the idea was for it to have an Erasure, "A Little Respect" feel. I experimented with the song shortly after writing it, I did my own mix, changing the chords to minor chords and originally having an electric guitar part in the chorus, trying to go for a ZZ Top meets New Order sound. When I played both versions for Brett and Garenne they took to the darker version. It's a masterful contradiction, the words are happy and light, but the music is dark and has an aggressive potential. I would like to go back and do a new version of this song and really bring out the aggressiveness that dying to come out, and bring back the guitar part.
This version was recorded after I ran into Brett and Garenne at the Depeche Mode Exciter tour in Chicago, it had been a long time since we've seen each other and we thought it would be fun to get together again and work on some stuff. We recorded this song during that brief reunion.
Lyrics
I realize
that something about you
drives me wild
only when you don't let
the rain spoil your fun
it's more than eyes
that can melt my heart
in a glance
it's your smile
that brings me home
in this circumstance
oooh, how good it is
to be alive
when i see that beautiful smile
and i can't stand
the thought of a day
that you would go away
if i don't seem
my normal to you
then i am missing something
one of those days
without you
and i feel i could explode
another side to everyone
though inside i want to scream
when you are there
it's like the sun
shining on me
you beautiful thing
oooh, how good it is
to be alive
when i see that beautiful smile
and i can't stand
the thought of a day
that you would go away
i'm alive
alive
i'm alive
i'm alive
alive
so alive
