Story Behind the Song
Because we moved around as much as we did, I never really had any long-term friends (other than my family - and they were my friends). I started making some good friends in Chicago and then - we moved. Memphis was a bit different. First off, the change in the society was drastic from Chicago. It was like going back in time - at least from a mind-set perspective. Racial issues, smaller dreams, not much dreaming outside what they knew. On one hand, I think as part of every child's education they should have to spend a few years in different socio-economic classes and have those life experiences that help us grow - the things that school can't teach.
Now, the flip-side to that is that there are things that you do as a person to 'survive' life. Some of them healthy, some - not so healthy. This song speaks to one of those not-so-healthy ways that we use to stay safe.
When I first heard this song, it was so powerful - and I can completely relate. This has been my attitude in my lifeā¦ I'm not afraid to try anything - well, most anything. How do we learn and grow if we don't 'go out on that limb'. But once out on the limb.. How do we survive if that limb should break. 'I'm not afraid of Anything' is that song for me. The walls that we build around ourselves to keep us safe - but then you realize that those walls are keeping each of us from growing and learning and keeping us from our potential.
I read an amazing book - 'The Art of Possibility'. It has helped me be more healthy with the walls that I put up - and the people that I trust. One thing that it said that I will always remember is that (and I'm paraphrasing) - many of us are just trying to 'Survive life' and because all of our efforts are going there - we are not able to live life. That's what the book said to me - and it has made me change my approach to life. Don't get caught up in the negative stuff - because when I'm negative, it effects those around me. Now, I'm not saying that you have to be falsely happy - but always look on the bright side. It's not what happens to us in our lives that define us as people (yes, it contributes a great deal), but, it's how we react, or influence how we react to things in our lives that make us quality people.
