This is a traditional style honky tonk shuffle about a man who has everything except the one thing he wants. We recorded this one live at the Saddle-Light Club in Rock Springs, WY in Dec. of 1996. I wrote the song while driving in my car north of green bay late one night in the summer of 1995. That's me trying to play pedal steel on the intro and turn-arounds.

    Story Behind the Song
---I wrote this song in august of 1995. we were re-forming the band and had been a while without a gig.
I was driving home to Upper Michigan from the band's base in Rock Falls, IL. When I got north of green bay I turned off the radio since it is hard to get a station up there anyway. Just started singing(badly) to myself and the words to this song started coming.
I had the beginning verse and chorus finished before I got to escanaba, MI. I wrote down what I had before going to bed and finished the rest of it the next day.
The little turnaround and vocal kickoff at the beginning came to me first- reminds me of the intro of the travis tritt song "the whiskey ain't working."
The whole beginning verse of my song is a kind of a setup for the chorus and verses which follow. The structure of the beginning verse is never repeated. And notice how we don't even get to the first "verse" until well into the song. I thought this was pretty clever.
The song was recorded on a six-track cassette recorder at the Saddle-Light nightclub in Rock Springs, WY in late Dec. 1996.
I added the live "speaking" intro from another live recording of the same song where Jim messed up the lyrics.
We mixed the song in the Green-T band house (in pocatello) a few days later. I hope to make a good studio recording of this song one day. It is one of my favorites.
This demo is pretty rough sounding. -Especially my pedal steel playing- I was just learning to play pedal steel during that tour. My intonation was off- way off! But the drunken cowboys didn't seem to notice.
The inspiration for the song was a pretty little redhead who broke a guitar player's heart.

    Lyrics
    EVERYTHING BUT YOU

    Loneliness and heartache
    Are knocking at my door
They just came by to tell me
    You don't love me anymore
    Misery loves company
So I'll have a friend or two
I've got memories, I've got sorrow
    I've got everything but you

    chorus:
    Everything but you
    Is not enough for me
    There's nothing I can do
    To erase your memory
IS there nothing I can say
To make you love me too?
Since you're gone I'm all alone
    With everything but you

    verse 1:
I've got your picture on the wall
    That I can talk to
There's a bar on the corner
    That I can walk to
I'll be feeling fine come closing time
But when I get back home
I'll hold you in my mind
    And pretend I'm not alone

    repeat chorus

    verse2:
There's a letter on the table
    where you left it
You gave me all the blame
    I should have guessed it
    Your leaving left me lonely
With a heart that's torn in two
    Holding on to memories
When I should be holding you.

    repeat chorus
