    Story Behind the Song
Its a folk song with a twist

    Lyrics

    Early in the morning
    backpack on the floor
    got my boots awaitin'
cuz I won't be home no more

I'm ramblin' on to another town
where your naggin' arm can't reach me
    and the skys are peachy
    up ahead.

well Johnny ain't got no liquor
    his woman poured it out
found him sleepin' on the floor
    his mouth under the spout

    now he's ramblin' onto town
where her naggin' arm can't reach him
    and the moonshine is free-man
    up ahead

    one day Johnny came over
his hands smelled like clover cuz
    he'd been sleeping in
    the grass again

he said his woman sent him a bill
    law man spoke quite ill
    of leavin mama a kid
    with no dad

he said boy you gotta help me
    this woman's gon' trail me
    through hell and purgatry
and even on up to the
    pearly white gates.

I said whoa man what can I do
I got a woman and my own problems too
you have a rifle you can use
and you can put her down
    on that floor.

now Johnny went and got it
    that rifle on his wall
you know he never had shot it
at nay thing bigger than a squirrel

    early in the morning
    Johnny slams the door
he off and shot his lady
she won't be naggin' him no more
    but the sheriff came down
you know his naggin' arm can reach us
    no matter how far
    we run

then I heard a knock on my door
    and so I opened it...

and there was the sheriff, lookin' at me
the sun was settin' I could barely see
all the state boys' cruisers in my lawn

I said officer no there's some kinda mistake
you see Johnny, he's the one who takes the bullet cake
and he shot his lady dead in Abilene.
