Solid pop/rock ballad penned by Ed Willing, remeniscent of Richard Marks and Bryan Adams. Passionate lead vocals and powerful lyrics combine to make a biting rock ballad, complete with a doubly powerful guitar solo by legendary blues guitarist Rex Carrol (founder of 80's rock groups Whitecross and King James). This song is a must listen... |

Story Behind the Song
I attended a conference for young adults in 2001 called New Attitude, in Philadelphia, PA. The theme of the weekend was "Undeserving", and was packed with seminars and keynotes discussing the power of the cross in the believer's life. I was deeply moved by this conference, and wrote down one phrase in my songwriting "seed-file", "Mercy Undeserving". There it sat for nearly one year when one day I pulled it out and sat at the piano and immediately proceeded to write the following song in less than 5 minutes. Not a single note has changed since that moment simply because the song WAS complete the first draft... unheard of for my writing. It was well received at my church (probably because no one knew I wrote it!), and Tony, my long time friend in Wisconsin asked me if he could record it. I said sure. So we hooked up with Tony's old friend Rex Carroll (two-time Dove Award Winner and Grammy nominee), and cut the 25+ tracks in 15 hours in the studio. It was a miracle of God that we got done what we did in the time that was given us, but God's hand WAS on it, and I believe this song will touch many with it's message of our total inability to grow and our lack of merit in God's eyes, except for the grace provided by the cross... of which I am TOTALLY undeserving. Give it a listen, and tell me how it impacted you.
Lyrics
Undeserving
Mercy undeserving,
I come to seek
fragile on this altar
I will lay at Your feet
All my human prodigal tendencies.
Mercy undeserving,
Your grace unto me.
Mercy undeserving,
I long to behold
Peace in troubled waters
I cannot control
Take all my own frailty
and make me strong.
Mercy undeserving,
It's bringing me home!
Undeserving,
Undeserving of Your grace!
Lord, I've come to know
I can trust and obey,
But I'm undeserving, Whoa...
