Story Behind the Song
Sometimes I get discouraged because even my best attempts at following the Lord are disastrous. Other times, when things are going well, I like to take the credit for all the good that has happened. This song reminds me of where I really stand, on both occasions.
Lyrics
Filthy Rags
Got up this morning, Lord, started my day without You.
Can you believe the things that a human being will do?
I couldn't have been more selfish, Lord, trying to get my way.
No wonder I ended up having such an awful day.
Well, You were there beside me, Lord, asking to come in my soul,
But I said No, thanks, Lord, I've got everything under control.
But by now I should know.
Whether I'm right, whether I’m wrong
I’ve got to lay it all at the foot of Your throne.
If I’ve been bad, If I’ve been good,
Done things I shouldn’t and things I should.
‘Cause without You, Lord, its all filthy rags.
Filthy rags. Filthy rags.
Got up this morning, Lord, started my day without You.
Can You believe the things that a human being will do?
I had people praising Your name, praising my name too.
Felt like I could walk on water, even with my eyes off You.
Well, You were there beside me, Lord, asking to come in my soul,
But I said "No, thanks, Lord, I’ve got everything under control."
But by now I should know.
Whether I’m right, whether I’m wrong
I’ve got to lay it all at the foot of Your throne.
If I’ve been bad, If I’ve been good,
Done things I shouldn’t and things I should.
‘Cause without You, Lord, its all filthy rags.
Filthy rags. Filthy rags
I’ve been right, I’ve been wrong
I’m here to lay it all at the foot of Your throne.
I’ve been bad, I’ve been good,
Done things I shouldn’t and things I should.
But without You, Lord, it’s all filthy rags.
My righteousness is like filthy rags,
But you can make me white as snow.
Whiter than snow, whiter than snow, whiter than snow,
From filthy rags.
