Story Behind the Song
This was written in Blue Hill, Maine after spending the afternoon at the Blue Hill fair. It's one of my favorite old fashioned carnivals. There are so many carnival songs out recorded - the atmosphere just begs to be turned into story. I couldn't resist throwing one into the mix.
Lyrics
Hes the ride man, got control
Run the people in circles to rock n roll
Shes the freak show host, drew the short straw
Theyll meet later when everything closes
In a trailer on the back dirt lot
CH
Its another small town, another fairground
Another “Show must go on.”
Its a carnival life, shes a carnival wife
Stuck in a carnival song
Hes the swingman, put the lever in gear
Country music playing over hot summer air
Draws the long line, cause he pleases the crowd
She laughs as he dances around
CH
They had dreams once, long ago
They were young then and it was still a show
Now the towns keep coming and its getting old
She wakes up, smelling grease from the fried dough
