Story Behind the Song
Written in the Fall of 2002, "Overdose" takes the confessions of a drug addict, his constant battle with himself and his possible justification for doing himself in because of his exhausting lifelong vigil to stay clean, and pushes along in a bluesy, soulful shuffle. The addict's cry for help comes across dark but prayerful as his admits he would rather be alive, and in pain than die and not return to those he loves.
Lyrics
Overdose
I felt the sores every day, but the fright would come
Then hunger took it all away, an eye for a song
Well it won't leave me when I need to run
I feel the pain every day and it's in my soul
In the silence of the night I wonder why
Why the shakes never stay and the waves go by
I never did understand about my kind
I turn against another plan and waste my mind
Crawling home
Is not the way I hope
To kill my day with an overdose
and never return to you, and never return to you
Never cried in the night or wet my bed
but tore at my face and smashed my head
with blood on my fingers and on my hands
inside of the cage and called for death
Crawling home
Is not the way I hope
To kill my day with an overdose
and never return to you, and never return
