Story Behind the Song
I wrote the lyrics in 1995. I guy that I knew and had played in a band with back in the 70's woke me up by pounding on my door at 3am, in fall of 1988 or 89. He was quite drunk, and thought he left his coat at my house. At that point I had not seen him or talked to him in years. But I let him in and and gave him a ride home, after a stop a a convenience store to buy smokes.
The verses compare and contrast his life and mine. The last chorus is fictional , as he is still alive. In fact I saw him walking down a street near his house a week before Christmas.
Lyrics
When we were young, we ran in the same circles. Knew the same faces, played the same chords.
Then slowly as it goes, we drifted and drafted directions on divergent lines, and found our own way.
Last Time I Saw Him, he knocked on my door at 3am, Looking for his coat and asking for a ride to get to work.
Call it what you will, but I did the straight and narrow, bought a home and went straight to boredom.
Wandering out and in, he found his own way, but not quite meeting the ends, and going the way that so few had traveled.
LastTime I Saw Him, he walked out of the store, swearing they gave him the wrong change for a pack pack of Winstons he just lit.
3rd verse..... then
Last Time I Saw him, his picture was on a narrow column paper, they said it was just a bar fight, and that he was a regular there.
