Story Behind the Song
an intro by Lee Lynds
One of Marlene's favourite recording artists is Willie Nelson.
In fact, she claims an undying love for the man.
The title of the song comes from an innocent incident. I was biding my time patiently (okay, not really patiently) while Marlene seemed to be delaying a decision that needed to made, at least in my mind, immediately
When I could stand it no longer, I asked, "What are you waiting for?"
The response let me know she was not going to be rushed. "I'm waitin' for Willie... okay?"
Before long, the lyrics were on paper, and the music soon followed.
Lyrics
She's hangin' out clothes on the back yard line
"These belong to Willie, he'll be back sometime"
Folks around here say she's crazy as a loon
She whistles while she works and she sings that little tune
She's waitin', waitin' for Willie
She's waitin', waitin' for Willie
Well, Willie left her ten long years ago
And even though he's gone, she still loves him so
Folks around here say he's never comin' back
Took ev'rything he needed in a gunny sack
She's waitin', waitin' for Willie
She's waitin', waitin' for Willie
When Willie comes back he'll bring a bunch of flowers
She'll make a pot of coffee, they'll talk away the hours
When Willie comes home, they'll be wed the next day
Just like the plans they made before he went away
She's waitin', waitin' for Willie
She's waitin', waitin' for Willie
(instrumental)
When Willie comes back he'll bring a bunch of flowers
She'll make a pot of coffee, they'll talk away the hours
When Willie comes home, they'll be wed the next day
Just like the plans they made before he went away
She's waitin', waitin' for Willie
She's waitin', waitin' for Willie
She's sittin' out front in her tattered chair
Lookin' for some comfort but Willie isn't there
Folks around here say that ev'ry single night
There's a candle in the window, that's Willie's guiding light
She's waitin', waitin' for Willie
She's waitin', waitin' for Willie
She's waitin', waitin' for Willie
She's waitin', waitin' for Willie
Still waitin', waitin' for Willie
