Lyrics
I made it on down south,
I didn't get there 'til late;
after all those years I stayed at home,
when I got there it was strange.
Everyone speaks plain,
they call you "sir" or "ma'am";
everyone stands tall and proud,
no one's ashamed like I am.
If I were one of them,
I'd be suspicious, too;
and I'd like to fit,
win respect,
feel worthy like they do.
But there's no way
I'll ever pull it off anymore,
for I've seen too much around the world and
it's not as simple as it seems.
(chorus)
And there's no going back
or settling down
in some new place
or in my hometown;
I don't know where to look
to find my dreams;
I've seen too much,
it's not as simple as it seems.
I made it to the East Coast,
to all the cities of which I'd heard;
after all that time I told myself
"you'll go someday, rest assured".
I looked up at the buildings,
they made me feel so small;
Big Apple, Washington and Boston,
sophistication called.
The people seemed so worldly,
at the hub and at their ease,
but I came to learn their stress and fear,
their life's like a disease;
it's not as simple as it seems.
(chorus)
And there's no going back
or settling down
in some new place
or in my hometown;
I don't know where to look
to find my dreams;
I've seen too much,
it's not as simple as it seems.
(accordion solo)
Made it to most of the countries on this Earth,
spent some time in many parts
to quench my knowledge thirst.
Thought it was maybe time
to come full circle home;
when I got there all I found out was
I am still alone.
(chorus)
And there's no going back, hey,
or settling down
in some new place
or in my hometown;
I don't know where to look
to find my dreams;
I've seen too much,
it's not as simple as it seems.
(chorus)
And there's no going back
or settling down
in some new place
or in my hometown;
Don't fit in anywhere,
it's too late for me;
I've seen all the world, and
it's not as simple as it seems.
