	Story Behind the Song Sometimes you write something before you really understand it, and that's why this song is only now seeing the light of day even though the chorus was written several years ago. At the time, I suspected it would be another 'bar song' about being the center of your own private universe--and then losing the feeling--and I just didn't think I could say anything more on the topic. But then the line about "if you're not careful you become what you hate" appeared out of the blue, and it was suddenly very obvious which direction this song needed to take. Laugh at divine inspiration if you want, but I've always said God can be pretty direct when He wants to. The song was finished in a week over June 2001, and shortly thereafter I began plotting my move from Clemson to Charlotte because I thought it was pretty stupid not to follow my own advice. Sitting here in my brand new place just off Cleveland Avenue, I finally know exactly what I was writing about. Getting old doesn't happen when you celebrate a birthday--only when you trap yourself in a bad situation because comfort or stability or all the material things in this world paralyze your ability to change. Guess what? Change is not as hard as you think. As I wrote long before I understood, take what you need and burn the rest.
