Story Behind the Song
Erosion began as a screenplay I was working on, but I didn't feel I was a skilled enough screenwriter at the time to tackle such a project. I was twenty years old at the time. Meanwhile, I had just started jamming with a guy from one of my classes at Grand Rapids Community College, with the hopes of putting together a surf rock band. However, we couldn't find a bassist or a drummer, so we created a two-man concept album instead. Every sound on it correlates with a specific image that we had talked about beforehand. This was my first attempt at writing music, as well as the first (and only) official live multi-piece band I've ever performed in. About half the people in the audience would usually be into us, and half would wonder where the hell the rest of the band was. We were an underground band in a town with no underground. Nonetheless, we had a small but dedicated following. Matt currently still lives in Grand Rapids, playing bass in a garage-punk band called The Lametown Graduates.
