Originally titled "Inside Out," this song is one of the older ones on the album and probably the most commercial. "Where Do I Begin?" has been transformed from a folk song to a soft rock song in it's most recent recording. |

Story Behind the Song
Many people already know this song in a more pop-version that I posted here on my mp3.com page several years ago. It has always been popular and it was a joy for me to re-record it with layers of electric guitars, giving the whole thing a “live” feel.
The song's meaning is quite obvious I think – it expresses the feeling of alienation within a culture. There is a recognition within the words that there are other “lonely souls” in the world who feel the same thing, and therefore some comfort is drawn from that. It was one of the easiest of my songs to write – the whole song came to me at once, verses, choruses and middle, and I made only a few small changes to the original lyrics, just to make it run more smoothly. I wrote it on the acoustic guitar, using a simple trick of moving a first-position A chord up and down the fretboard and the song evolved from there.
Lyrics
Do you ever feel alone and
Do you think you're the only one?
Do you sometimes think you're grieving
For a friend you feel you've never known?
Well just like you, I'm walking quickly
To avoid the pain within me
I'm on the inside looking outside
On the outside looking in
I gotta play by the rules they never taught me
Where do I begin, where do I begin?
Do you ever see a shadow
Like a cloud across the sun?
Do you sometimes look behind you
And when you do, you see that there's no one?
Well look at me, you'll recognise me
Look real close, see what's inside me
I'm on the inside looking outside
On the outside looking in
I gotta play by the rules they never taught me
Where do I begin, where do I begin?
I close my eyes and think the things I cannot say
And in my mind I watch them slowly slip away
I'm on the inside looking outside
On the outside looking in
I gotta play by the rules they never taught me
Where do I begin, where do I begin?
