Towards the end of his life,
Debussy wrote a set of piano etudes reflecting
his idiosyncratic ideas about piano technique
and sound. The Chromatic Etude is based on the
idea of playing closely spaced notes within
the chromatic scale. Of course, this isn't just
a technical exercise--it's a wonderful
piece showing the wide range impressionistic
colors and textures Debussy is so famous for.
