Story Behind the Song
The song was written as a response to the lack of civil liberties Americans experience every day. We are not allowed to decide what to put into our bodies, who to have sex with, or what we can see. The government presumes to take control of our individual growth and development, which each individual is responsible for. In addition, our fair leaders feel the responsibility to take away welfare for the poor, while giving millions of dollars annually to large corporations so that they may market themselves in foreign countries. If we paid attention, we might notice that, of the small percentage of our taxes that go to welfare, only a small percentage of that actually goes to feed and house the poor. The rest goes to McDonald's, so they can sell Quarter Pounders to Lithuanians. The song was written over the course of a year, and was recorded with Josh "wah-wah" Bartunik at Thunderclap Studios in Hammond Indiana. It was mixed by Doug Grau in Nashville, TN. I'm still pissed off that I can't suck on a joint without Uncle Sam having the right to seize my assets and put me in prison, but railing against tyranny seems to ease some of the pressure of dealing with it.
Lyrics
Open Letter (to Big Brother)
Dear Mr. Government
What can I put in my mouth
I'm not old enough yet to make my own decisions
Please help me figure this out
Please, Mr. Government
I am so afraid of change
There's something here might make my life better
Won't you please take it away
Sell my life, pay the price
Just take my liberties for all of life's necessities
Tax and vice as you like
It's your privilege
I'm not the one who's stinking rich
And I've only got 21 years under my belt
And I can't think for myself
Send out your plain-clothes police
Cause if I don't follow all your moral ultimatums, I'd be much better off
in jail
Dear Mr. Government
Big Business needs some more cash
To help them enslave yet another consumer
I won't mind giving them that
What if, Mr. Government
That song might poison my mind
Well, if you can't take it away completely
At least make it hard to find
Dear Mr. Government
I sign this letter "Truly,
Another hopeless fucking automaton."
I hope you know it's from me
