Story Behind the Song
AMERICA'S FORGOTTEN PEOPLE, AS WITH ALL OF MY EIGHTY ORIGINAL SONGS, I DIDN'T PLAN ON WRITING IT. Born and raised in the ghetto of Detroit, I can appreciate some of the trials they go through. When I was a boy, they called them bums. We never looked at them like that, and found out early that friendships weren't about gender, social level, or color. Living in a rat infested apartment in Detroit, we learned to live with rats getting on to the bed at night, getting bitten by bed bugs, dealing with roaches. My Mother believed, practiced , and taught us that you can't help being poor, but you can help being clean and having a clean place to live in. My Father rode the trains, (hobo style) to get to work and to find a better life for us. He and my Mother struggled to get us out of the slums, and it was their love and determination that made it possible. Point!
They couldn't help being poor, and many times close to being homeless, like many of the families in the world today! Has nothing to do with ability to succeed, or determination! I tried many times to contact people in a position to help this song go public, to raise both money and the level of awareness of the homeless' plight, with no success so far. Public TV stations, local, and National TV stations. No response! Guess I don't have enough clout/power to get their help! So, I hope to get the message across via the net, our future power vehicle for the working/thinking people. These people need a way out, if they want to put forth the effort to escape and contribute to the growth of our country. Hope that you like the song..
Lyrics
WALKING DOWN THIS COLD DARK STREET
WITH THE WIND CUTTING A CHILL RIGHT THROUGH MY CLOTHES
HAVEN'T HAD A HOT MEAL TO EAT
OR A WARM PLACE TO SLEEP FOR SUCH A LONG LONG TIME
I pulled my hat down on my face
people pass me by going on their way
tomorrow's such a long time
got to find my way back in
if i can make it until tomorrow
i feel i be ok then
turn my collar to the wind
looking for a place to rest for the night
climb in the back of an old junk truck
pull a piece of cardboard up over my head
trying to get to tomorrow
knowing that this night may never end
tomorrow's such a long long time
got to find my way again
if i can make it til tomorrow
i know i'll be much better then
