Story Behind the Song
Time Written:
This song was written at about 12:00 midnight a few days after being laid off from my job. Dealing with insomnia, I found myself praying about things in my life while picking my guitar. About that time is when the grandfather clock in the room started to chime. That's when the idea for the song struck me.
Subject:
The song talks about a man's frustration when the economy is bad, work isn't available, and he has a family that he loves and wants to take care of. It's not a "whoa is me" song as much as a song trying to convey the utter frustration and of the situation.
Writing/Recording Time:
This was one of those rare songs that took only about 1/2 hour to write. It was recorded the next day.
Tidbits:
I used "Tell It To The Night" to compete in the USA Network's Nashville Star competition in Boise. It was also the first song I played live on the air as a solo act (KQFC 98 FM Boise on December 5, 2002).

Tell It To The Night

Sitting in the midnight hour while they’re tucked in bed
Staring out into the dark, trying to clear my head
Slowdowns at the factory have set my mind on fire
I’d try to go to sleep, but I’m too damn tired
I don’t know how to tell my kids that I’m not Superman
Try my best to make ends meet, but I’m just one man
For right now I guess I’ll sit right here, and tell it to the night
Tell it to the night
Looking for a smile when life frowns
In that absence of light
My grandfather’s hands quit spinning ‘round
I could tell myself that there’s an end in sight
But I’ll tell it to the night
Silently I sit and watch her as she lies in sleep
But a dagger cuts my heart when I hear her weep
Slowdowns at the factory have set her mind on fire
When I promised her the world she was left with desire
I don’t know how to tell my wife that I’m not Superman
Try my best to make ends meet, but I’m just one man
For right now I guess I’ll sit right here, and tell it to the night
Tell it to the night
Looking for a smile when life frowns
In that absence of light
My grandfather’s hands quit spinning ‘round
Tell it to the night
Try to rest my feet on solid ground
When the world isn’t right
My grandfather’s chimes just quit playing their sound
I could tell myself that there’s an end in sight
But I’ll tell it to the night
I could tell myself that things will be all right
But I’ll tell it to the night
