    Story Behind the Song
The Beast is about astrology and provides some characterisation of the planets based on mythological attributes. During the time of composition I was intrigued by the story of Theseus encounter with the minotaur in the labyrinth. In the Theseus story two outcomes are possible, one that the Minotaur was destroyed or alternatively that the beast was controlled for the benefits it could provide. We all seem to have the beast within and the struggle to keep it under control is a fact of life. It is the darkness that gives definition to the light and one without the other produces only blindness.
I recorded the original version on 4 track where the trumpet was used to give a bullfight atmosphere and is symbolic of the beast. This later studio produced version was done in one take. It is slower but still evocative.

    Lyrics
Jupiter and Saturn were cooking up a pattern
    At a parlez-vous
They were down by the River Clyde
    Where Neptune the Fishman bides
    In a two by two
    Along came that dude Uranus
Just like a bolt out of the blue
And Pluto and the Dark Vibrators
Turned the crowd into a hullabaloo
    They cried out
    'Who can fight the Beast?'
    It walks and It Talks
    'Who can fight the Beast?'

Now Mars had this thing about Venus
Some say it was love, others lust
Said nothing should ever come between us
But to Mercury they gave too much trust
Now Mercury he met the Fishman
    Fishman said,
'Come child now tell me no lie
If its true what they say about Venus
How come the Moon aint blue in the sky?'
    I blame the Moon
    'Who can fight the Beast?'
