    Story Behind the Song
I was housesitting for my folks. It was mid-winter in southwestern Michigan. I was living in Chicago and to visit the scene of my highschool life alone and that time of year was a bit haunting.
I took myself to dinner one evening. It was a family owned place out in the country with huge picture windows over looking a field bordered by a stand of hardwoods. I sat before one of those windows, pulled out a pen and on a napkin penned the lyrics to this tune.
I had recorded the melody/rythym tracks on a little Fostex four-track. It was a flutter
kick sort of '80s thing with alot of sound.
I decided it didn't work with all of that production.
I redid it as a folk song, guitar and vocals to click-track on a Fostex hard-disk.
I overdubbed percussion on a dumbek, shakers, finger cymbals and a Yamaha
sample of an oil drum hit. Then I washed it with a volume pedal guitar track with lots of delay.
My vocalist at the time wanted a more upbeat rendition of the song. She won ofcourse and the result of that can be heard on "Fields in Fall"(see bio).
I had sworn that I would use the old tracks and redo the piece the way I had envisioned it. So six years later here's the old version, remixed, augmented with Triton percussion samples and a fine
    shakahuchi.

    Lyrics
    into the night
    sad and dark
    the cool concluding space
    into the night
    a kinder light
    to trace this pilgrims face
    bound beneath Orion
    neither predator nor prey
    heirless, void of property
    so far along the way
    into the night

    into the night
    where promise served me
    soft oblivion
    into the night
    and the lap of indigo
    i slept upon
    gone beyond and gone beyond
    the realm of my conceit
    gone beyond the rift
so fast expanding at my feet
    into the night

    into the night
all that i assumed myself to be
    into the night
    never was
    nor is
    nor shall now be

    gone beyond and gone beyond
    beyond beyond and gone
