    Story Behind the Song
This song was written during the crisis in Kosovo, when the Muslim residents were being forced from their homes by the Serbs. However, the song applies to this situation whereever it happens all over the world.

    Lyrics
We were woken at 5 A.M. by the crash of the door and the soldiers streaming in,
They had masks on their faces, and they said we had half an hour to leave if we wanted to live.
My Dad was shot at point blank range as he got out of bed.
My Mama screamed and she ran to him, and before he died he whispered something in her ear.

It's not that we were caught by surprise.
We knew they were coming, we just thought we'd survive.
My Mom and I walked down the road – as a trickle became a flood.
We were massed at the border – no longer farmers, we were nothing – just refugees.

Left behind was the land that sustained our family through two world wars, and the communists,
    and who knows who else.
I always thought it had been our land forever and would always be.
My Daddy taught me the value of nature's bounty – I knew the planting time by the way the sun
    rose in the valley.
He said the fawn and the eagle had a right to share it, too.

    Now we've all gone away.
My Mom says my Daddy's spirit will stay.
Now I'm standing in line – my job is to get the bread and find a way to keep us warm,
A way to keep us together – I get so discouraged… Then my Mama whispers in my ear…

Don't lose hope. Don't lose hope. Don't lose hope.
Don't lose hope, 'cause it's the one thing they can't take away…
    Don't lose hope.

Here we stand at the barbed wire fence that separates us from the ones who have a home.
The lucky ones are leaving for a cottage built for three that now holds twenty.
But my Mom and I are like barbarians, stuck at the gate, behind the wall, before the stares of the
men who don't want us to be here…
Believe me, we feel the same.

I made friends with a Red Cross nurse.
What will I do when she goes away?
My Mama said to ask that little girl if she still has a family. "Believe me son, there's worse off
    than you.
"At least you still have me, she has no one at all."
So I whispered in her ear…

Don't lose hope. Don't lose hope.
Maybe if we keep we keep on whispering it from ear to ear.
One day, we'll all get out of here.
Don't lose hope, 'cause it's the one thing they can't take away…
    Don't lose hope.
