Back from the war. It is not faith itself that he questions, but where faith shall be placed. | MP3.com CD: His Life and Times (1950-2000) - buy it!

Story Behind the Song
I believe a young man who's endured a mean bastard of a father and a mean bastard of a war will have little recourse but to distrust "similar" institutions. The Church is both the figure of a parent and the emblem of the eternal war between good and evil: so naturally our young man is not going to feel too well-disposed to it!
Lyrics
[chorus:]
No, I ain't going back there.
No priest gonna tell me what I already know.
If I want to talk to the Almighty, I'll say a prayer.
If I want to talk to the Devil, I know where to go.
I seen bliss in the mist over faraway swamps.
I seen rapture in the eyes of a dying bird.
I heard the trump when you told me your name, Loretta.
So who says I need to hear the Word?
[chorus]
I been where no man on earth has been,
And that's in the deeps of your womb.
I taste the host on my tongue when we kiss, Loretta.
I was born with the word writ clear on my tomb.
[chorus]
I sleep in the night, and I wake in the day.
I keep my eyes open and see what I must.
The devil distracts me some, but you keep me straight, Loretta.
You whisper the Word to the ears of my lust.
[chorus]
