Story Behind the Song
The main character tells the story of his only great love to an audience of one - the person adjacent to his barstool - looking straight ahead, almost indifferent to being heard. The narrative is recalled with lapses of memory and judgement. The kind of lapses that occur in natural recollection. At once, he is `back in the day` and swallowed by his present. He holds only a postcard from his estranged love detailing the birth of his son and the new man in her life fathering him. His reading of her letter is rife with misinterpretation of fact: understanding her happiness as regret; taking the letter sent as a cry for help. He is every man and no one simultaneously. He is the part in each one of us we long for to deny. Sorrowfully, he is caught in time, a moment long ago that now dictates his inability to see things for what they actually are or ever were. All he can do is tell his story and wish things were different.

Postcards from Elizabeth, Pt.II
music/lyrics İMarke Vaske 2002
BEEN AROUND THIS WORLD IN MY MIND.
THERE AIN`T AIR HALF AS SWEET AS WHEN I WALK BESIDE YOU - JUST YOU, JUST ME.
SHE SAID THERE AIN`T TIME FOR ANY OF THAT.
HONEY, DON`T YOU KNOW I DON`T NEED ANSWERS
JUST TAKE MY HAND WHILE WE`RE WALKING.
SOMETIMES I JUST WANT TO KNOW I`M BEING HEARD.
HOW FONDLY I RECALL THE SOUND OF HER VOICE.
HER WORDS THEN, THAT QUICK, THEY HELD ME THERE
AS IF THEY WERE SOMEHOW PAST AND I WAS SITTING HERE IN THE DARK
JUST LIKE I`M TALKING TO YOU NOW.
LAST WEEK MY EMILY, SHE TRACKED ME DOWN.
SHE WROTE ON A CARD SHE SENT FROM ELIZABETH.
SHE NEVER DID HAVE MUCH TO SAY.
BUT HER SILENCE ALWAYS SEEMED TO ME LIKE A PROMISE.
SHE SAID JUST AFTER SHE HAD GONE.
SHE HAD A SON AND NAMED HIM FOR HIS OLD MAN.
SHE SAID SHE NEVER COULD FORGET
THE WORDS OF LOVE OR HOW I`D HELD HER HAND.
HOW FONDLY I RECALL THE .... TO YOU NOW.
THAT NIGHT UNDER THE SMOKY RED OF THE CLEVELAND AIR.
I REACHED FOR HER BUT NEVER DID SHE REACH BACK.
NO SHE WAS SAYIN SOMETHIN `BOUT IT BEIN TIME TO GO -
FOR HER TO FIND HERSELF SOMEWHERES A WAYS DOWN THE ROAD ... DOWN THE ROAD.
NOW MY SWEET EM`S GOIN BY A DIFFERENT NAME.
SHE SAID HE`S WELL OFF AND HE SURE TREATS HER KIND.
AW AND LITTLE JOHN`S TAKEN WELL TO HIM.
IF I HAPPEN IN THEIR PARTS, I`D HAVE TO DROP IN.
HELL, I WONDER IF I EVER DID,
WHAT NAME SHE`D GIVE TO THE STRANGER STANDIN THERE IN THEIR HOME.
AND AS I SHOOK THE HUSBAND`S HAND,
WOULD SHE SAY NOW LITTLE JOHN, THIS IS YOUR OLD MAN.
HOW FONDLY I RECALL ... TALKING TO YOU NOW.
JUST LIKE I`M TALKING TO YOU NOW.
