One of the most virtuosic pieces of 17th century Italy, "Sonata Decima a 3" is written for two violins, viola da gamba (or another bass instrument) and a harpsichord. It is composed by a Venetian composer, Dario Castello, who was a contemporary of the great Claudio Monteverdi. Probably the most difficult sonata from his "Sonate Concertate", Op. 2, published in Venice in 1629, this sonata is full of inovative harmonies and daring musical ideas. While it is very difficult for players, this sonata in "stil moderno" ("modern style" - as the composer noted in its publication in 1629) is extremely exciting and rewarding. Listen to it, and you will probably notice such musical inventions that you can find in 20th century music. | MP3.com CD: Trio Sonatas & Chaconnas - buy it!
