Story Behind the Song
The tune, "Lasst uns erfreuen" was first published in the Geistliche Kirchengesange" in Cologne, Germany in 1623. It was harmonized and lengthened by Ralph Vaughan Williams in 1906. The "Canticle of the Sun" or the "Song of BrotherSun and of All Creatures", was written in Italian by St. Francis of Assisi in 1225. It is said to be the first religious poem in the Italian language. St. Francis' text, "All Creatures of Our God and King", expresses irrepressible and boundless joy in both God and his world. This arrangement was composed by colleague and friend, Dr. Jeffrey Prater, Professor of music at Iowa State University in 1988. "Processional on Lasst Uns Erfreuen" was published in the collection, "Festive Processionals", by Pro-Motion Music in 1988.
