Story Behind the Song
In the church of San Gil in Seville, Spain stands a lovely statue of the Virgin of Hope, (La Virgen de la Macarena). The bullfighters of Seville habitually come to San Gil to pray to the Virginof Hope before they enter the bullring, praying that they may live to see another day. Ralph Mendez wrote this piece for trumpet and titled it "La Virgen de la Macarena", or the "Bullfight Song", thus combining the religious and secular aspects of this national pastime of Spain.
