Story Behind the Song
A Perfect Mistake was written and recorded in one night. It deals with sacrificing one's self for love. Often times, people do things for the cause of love that are damaging. This is about the worst kind of death one can find. The death of the spirit.
The song was recorded in one take. David played and sang in order to capture a "live" feel, and hopefully, the emotion of the music.
Lyrics
A PERFECT MISTAKE
I was halfway asleep
But the stars they won’t keep
me in the sky
Would you wrap me up neat?
In case I drown in your sheets
in lullabies
And the light of your skin
Trapped me
I cannot be still
No
In a state I confessed…
Like a moth does in flame
Mary, in your hands
I
Show me I can stand
Tonight
Crush my wings and
Put them right
Don’t cry
I must be close to love
‘Cause I’m down on my knees
To pick it up
Wrapped in ribbons and blood
I still hope that everything’s enough
And your heaven has been
Tragic
Are you taking me home
Yet
I am starting to break…
Like a perfect mistake
