Story Behind the Song
Monica is one of my best friends. We met in college, and although we liked each other immediately, we stayed away from each other because we were both already in serious relationships. The resulting tension is the subject of this song. I wrote the chorus first, while I was at work one day. The real Monica is Chinese, hence the sing-song pentatonic melody.
Lyrics
On the street, she steps out from the car / Can't believe she came here from so far / We have quite a crisis on our hands / We have something no one understands / It's no use, no it's no use for you / And it's no news, no it's no news to you that I am burning / Come to me, I'll never let us end unhappily / 'Cause I can see the phoenix rising from this tragedy / Monica, I wish you weren't so far away from me / I dream of walking with you next to me / I wonder if we're ever going to be / Preordained, I knew it from the start / I have guilt, and you, a melting heart / This dream is rare but not in frequency / It's wide but there’s no place for you and me / It's no news, no it's no news to you / And it's no use, no it's no use for you to say I'm silly / Come to me, I'll never let us end unhappily / 'Cause I can see the phoenix rising from this tragedy / Monica, I wish you weren't so far away from me / I dream of waking with you next to me / I wonder if we're ever going to be
