Story Behind the Song
I was commissioned to write this song about Mother Teresa for a friend. He asked me if I would write a song about Mother's feelings about dedicating her life to God as a nun, both when she first made her commitment, and later when, as a nun, she embraced a new vocation, her life to the poorest of the poor. Mother's writings inspired me greatly as I researched this song and I was most impressed by her love for God. Writing the lyrics did not come easily (in fact I wrote the bulk of the song one month, and the rest several months later). Recording the song was easy - one take. I never dreamed, however, that Ron would put the beautiful and haunting orchestration to it that he did. Listening to it was a pure pleasure. The title of the song, by the way, is a common phrase that Mother used whenever she described work for the Lord.
Lyrics
Something beautiful for you
Something beautiful for you, my Lord
I offer you my life, oh my love
My life for you outpoured
There is nothing I can gie
Just this love for you in me that lives
Oh, my Jesus, I live for you.
Something beautiful from you
Something beautiful is in your call
I hear it in my heart like a song
To give to you my all
Lord there is nobody else
You alone, oh Jesus, are my spouse
Oh my Jesus, I live for you.
Oh Lord, I am merely a vessel for you
To be filled and poured out for all
And as I am emptied, such joy fills my heart
For you loved me enough to have called
Something beautiful for you
Something beautiful for you, my Lord
I sacrifice this life that I love
To go and love your poor
Every trembling hand I hold
Every face I kiss is yours alone
Oh my Jesus, I live for you
Oh my Jesus, I live for you
