Story Behind the Song
I was asked to produce a song for a compilation cd that was being put together in memory of Gaby 'n Mo's, a very supportive coffeehouse/venue in Austin, TX, that had to close its doors. At the time, I was just finishing pre-production work on my 2nd cd and this was a perfect opportunity to break the ice and get to work on what would/will be the first tune.
I made a rather conscious effort to keep the song positive, both lyrically and musically. It was winter time in Austin and we usually have rather mild winters down here. Boston wasn't too far from my mind and I suppose those cozy, east coast-winter feelings combined with the newness of having the community of Gaby 'n Mo's kind of redispersing brought about the song's general sentiment.
The song went very quickly for some reason - was possibly the easiest song ever to produce, perform, write the lyrics for, sing. Fancy that!
Lyrics
Once you give pleasure and happiness your time / You'll unstick that something that's been poisoning your mind / All of us girls who've written on the wall / Will find our small fortunes and parade around the stall /
But in a way / You have to run dry / Before you want to try / Your spirit never lies
To be stuck in the middle is to sigh at all the snow / When winter will be over / Remember this you know / All of us girls / Who've dappled in the past / Will forgive what's missing and hold onto what will last
Once you let go, swallow what should be in life / The picket fences and cherry blintzes / The joy the work the strife / All of us girls / Who've written on the wall / Will find our small fortune and parade around the stall
