    Story Behind the Song
Eleven is a chamber concerto, based on the ritornello concerto forms of Vivaldi and J.S. Bach. This piece continues my great interest in fusing music from different time periods, genres, and disciplines. It also gave me a chance to write exciting solos for every instrument in the ensemble. It's a very challenging piece for the soloists, as well as for the ensemble as a whole.

For a small change of pace, instead of using normal performance directions (such as con fuoco, etc), I used lines taken from different poems of various poets. The players can interpret these however they want, based on what the lines mean to them. The piece is laid out like this:

Introduction "From What Black Wells of Possibility" (feature instrument here is piano)
Ritornello "Sharp, Fast, Furious and Burning"
Solo 1 "The Force That Drives the Green Fuse Drives the Flower" (Flute)
Solo 2 "Brilliant" (percussion duet - ritornello)
Solo 3 "All Four Pillars of Enlightenment Crumble at Once!" (Viola)
Solo 4 "Quicken a Grey Pavement Into Soft Light that Rocks" (Flugelhorn - ritornello)
Solo 5 "And Between the Colors, A Small Silence" (Violin)
Solo 6 "Nine Adulteries, Twelve Liasons, Sixty Four Fornications and Something Approaching a Rape" (Electric Guitar)
Solo 7 "And Between the Colors, A Small Silence" (ContraBass)
Solo 8 "Quicken a Grey Pavement Into Soft Light that Rocks" (Tenor Saxophone - ritornello)
Solo 9 "All Four Pillars of Enlightenment Crumble at Once!" (Cello)
Solo 10 "Brilliant" (percussion duet - ritornello)
Solo 11 "The Force That Drives the Green Fuse Drives the Flower" (Clarinet)
Ritornello "Sharp, Fast, Furious and Burning"

The solo sections are arranged in a symmetrical pattern according to instrument family. For example, solo 1 is flute, solo 11 is clarinet - solo 2 is percussion, solo 10 is percussion, etc.
