Story Behind the Song
My mother'll probably freak out over this one, because there's just enough truth in it to mess with her little red head. Truth be told, though, it's an exercise in theme. Aon House is my favorite Delta blues singer, and he wrote amny osngs of this type. I figured I'd take a shot at one.
Lyrics
Raised for a Preacher
Raised for a preacher,
I believe she'd be dismayed.
Raised for a preacher,
I believe she'd be dismayed.
I'm the most backslidden creature
That the Lord has ever made.
She taught me to speak, to save a soul,
All I ever use it for's to talk myself into jelly-roll.
Raised for a preacher,
I believe she'd be dismayed.
I'm the most backslidden creature
That the Lord has ever made.
She gave me soft hands to turn a Bible page,
All I ever it for is to pick this guitar on a stage, well,
Raised for a preacher,
I believe she'd be dismayed.
I'm the most backslidden creature
That the Lord has ever made.
Solo
She taught me to sing, make a joyful noise,
All I ever use it for is to sing blues with the boys, well,
Raised for a preacher,
I believe she'd be dismayed, I believe she'd be dismayed,
Because I'm the most backslidden creature
This Lordy-Lord has ever made.
