Story Behind the Song
This song was written as a first person perspective from Robert Johnson, the Grandfather of the delta blues, about his trials and tribulations from selling his soul to the devil.
Lyrics
Verse 1
- Let me tell you about where I’ve been, down this road and back again. Got a story that no one would believe.
- I’ve been running from the man so long, you start to sing that Devil’s song, ain’t no point in trying to achieve.
Pre-Chorus
- So I went back that day, to the road and the man I’ll never say, I wanna feel this way forever. He said “I know how to get you there, but you’re going to have to pay.â€
Chorus
- And I said, “Running from the devil just gets so hard, you’ve got a picket fence but no front yard. You’ve got two shoes, but you got no street, got a huge plate with nothing to eat. Looking up at the moon only to find, you were blind so it’s in your mind. And you can’t escape ‘cause there’s Hell-hounds on your trail.â€
Verse 2
- Tried to change my ways since then, getting away from this evil man, looked at the clock says half past eight.
- I took all my stuff, threw it in my trunk, put on some Chapin, going 75 down highway 58.
Pre-Chorus
- Well the cop stopped me with his hand, I said “You don’t understand, I’m trying to get away from this land.â€
- He said “You can take this little ticket, and you can take it like a man.â€
Bridge
- Well I went down to the crossroads, and I made my dirty deal. On my knees in the street light, let me tell you how I feel.
