    Story Behind the Song
I wrote "Mama's Gone" in 1997 right after I had recorded "Face The World". It's basically a personification of what I was going through at the time, and was the last song I wrote before I had my second nervous breakdown. When I read the lyrics in hindsight, they seem to be a very clear warning of the breakdown that was to come. The title of the song and the chorus ultimately have nothing to do with the rest of the lyrics; they were created to interrupt the melancholy verses and upset the depressing flow of the song in general.

    Lyrics
If all the world were apple pie and all the sea were ink/ and all the trees were bread and cheese/ what would we have to drink?

If all the world were apple pie/ and all the sea were ink/ and all the trees were bread and cheese/ what would we have to drink?/ if all the world were apple pie/ and all the sea were ink/ and all the trees were bread and cheese/ what would we have to drink?

Dead moon/ black sky/ and all things live/ and all things die/ and all hands give/ and all hands take/ I wake from nightmares constantly wandering/ drifting/ sifting through the sands of time/ emancipated from fear but imprisoned in desperation/ my mind and blood thins/ watered down with love and a melancholy rainfall/ aren't we all just lost/ tossed aside and discarded souls litter the dusty roads/ I walk alone/ I walk to poems/ I talk against the wind/ I hide my face in shame/ I hate the pain/ the scars remain/ death is only a tollbooth/ and I don't have the correct amount of change/ but I want to pass/ enter the mysterious looking glass/ everyone is waiting for me on the other side/ I'm so alone/ why won't you let me die?

    CHORUS (x4)
    Don't cry...
    Mama's gone...

I'm sinking/ above the clouds/ below the barbed wire/ angel wings floating in an anxious limbo/ don't cry/ mama's gone/ entombed in the soil of her flesh/ we're all alone/ in a crowd of 6 billion faces/ I just want to go home/ grant me three wishes/ knock on wood/ rub the wound of my past self-destruct attempts/ the agony is loyal, standing by my side through it all/ aren't we all/ just lost/ tossed aside and discarded souls litter the dusty roads/ I walk alone/ I walk to poems/ I walk/ I roam the dream world with eyes open/ only my nerve endings are comatose/ chains rattling in the presence of my mind's ghost/ I'm not able to wish away the tears/ wash away the fears/ wait for the end, hoping that it's near/ I can see and I can believe/ but I can't feel a thing.

    CHORUS (x8)
