    Story Behind the Song
Many years ago I chose to break up with my then-fiancee at an expensive dinner in a crowded restaurant. This song explores why I decided to pull such a stunt.

    Lyrics
Im gonna feel about six inches high
If you look across at me and then start to cry
Right here at the table, in front of these people
But I know that you dont care
Im gonna feel like a total loser
If you start to shout and scream at me
Right here at the table, in front of these people
But I know that you dont care

All you care about is what I just said to you
I told you that Im having some doubts about us
And youre looking at your finger remembering November
When I gave you that diamond ring
    Timing is everything

Well I guess I could have waited for later
Another time when were all alone
But your conversation turned to the wedding
And I dont think I can go on
Well I guess I could have saved it for someday
But I dont know when someday would come
You were talking about children and white picket fences
And I dont think I can go on

All I cared about was letting you down easy
But I guess I opened up my mouth too soon
And youre looking at your finger remembering November
When I gave you that diamond ring
    Timing is everything

And if I kept on going
The way you wanted me to go
Years from now some winter morning
When we had hit an all-time low
    Id disappear into December
So Im sparing you the suffering
    Timing is everything

I know you feel like your life has come crashing
I know youre wondering why this time and place
Right here at the table, in front of these people
I guess Im just saving face
By saying all these things to you where were sitting
I know I wont have much explaining to do
Youll run for the doorway out into the nighttime
And I wont have to comfort you

All I cared about was being a man about it
But I guess I opened up my mouth too soon
Now youre taking off the ring that I gave you last November
And you’re saying better now than some distant cold December
And Ive finally told the truth but I dont feel any better
I guess I should have waited til spring
    Timing is everything
