    Story Behind the Song
Loneliness is the most common form of cancer in the contemporary urban environment. What I describe here is almost a terminal case. An original working title of this piece was "Toronto Life". I was born and raised in Toronto, the lyrics of this song were adapted from a poem written there; that poem, called "Snap Crackle Apocolypse", is to be found in my poetry collection available at www.briancampbell.org. The song was inspired by a riff from the British guitarist John Renbourne.

    Lyrics
FAR AWAY Words & Music © Brian Campbell 2002

The sun rises in the morning
    On yet another day --
You get up same time as normal
Why does everything seem so far away?

When you brush your teeth, there's an echo
    All around the room --
And when you sit down to your breakfast cereal
    An icy eye
Stares up from your silver spoon

    Put on your favourite suit
it seems like it's on loan
you look down at your hands
they seem not to be your own
    this morning you could swear
your whole body doesn't belong to you

So you buy the Globe and Mail
    melt in the subway crowd
    hold onto the silver pole
    in a rocking screeching car
    and skim through black print
    about suicide
    about fratricide
    about genocide
    and the millions of unemployed

Maybe it's the years of living alone
They too can take their toll
    Even when together
We were very much all alone
    I nourished your illusions
    You helped to nourish mine
Soon we were both talking to mirages
How did we ever let ourselves go so blind?

    Voices round the coffee maker
    Gossip about the boss
A chat about sports at lunch
The rest of the day shrouded
in thin blue columns of profit and loss

    Then home to TV
    another day gone by
    another day gone by
    another day gone by
they go by so swiftly, it seems
    flickering images
in soon forgotten dreams. . .

The sun rises in the morning
    On yet another day --
You get up same time as normal
Why does everything seem so far away?
Why does everything seem so far away?
Why does everything seem so far away?
