A man whose heart is free is trapped inside a city of concrete and steel that continues to grow around him. He dreams of a land of promise - where life and love are simple, but are always a true guide. A porch, a girl, a dog, and beautiful unobstructed sunrises and sunsets are all he needs for fulfillment. (Honorable Mention - John Lennon Song Contest - 2001)
CD: Petals & Thorns by Christopher-Sharratt   Label: Metro Records - Chroma-Soma Productions - Mpls, MN.
Credits: Dickie Christopher - writer, guitarist and vocals. With the Night Trap band

    Story Behind the Song
Dickie felt trapped in the city and longed for the simple country-life of his "Promise Land". (That's "land of promise") He wrote this as a gentle ballad with melodic harmonies in the verses. In production we picked up the tempo, moved the harmonies to the choruses, but the meaning held it's full impact. An Honorable Mention in the 2001 John Lennon Songwriting contest.

    Lyrics
There is a Promise Land. I’m leaning back on my porch and there’s a calm in my soul, watching the sun go down.
I know I would drown in the city.
And there’s a big yellow dog lying in front of me. We both have things we should do, but this sunset is something to see.
Then I wake up alone in the city.

Lord, you know, sometimes I feel like these four walls will someday take my place.
And I’ve tried to play their game but it evades me how these rats keep up this breakneck pace.
That’s why I steal these moments when I can. If I could I’d take your hand,
Slip off to the Promise Land and maybe you would see there’s still some sanity.

Looked in your eyes, I promised you I’d survive no matter what you do.
Adios, and until then I’ll bide my time in the Promise Land.

In my Promise Land I’m leaning back on my porch, and there’s a peace in my heart
Watching this red sunrise. I know I would die in the city.
And there’s a beautiful girl curling up next to me. There are some things I should say but this sunrise is something to see.
Then I wake up alone in the city.

Lord, you know sometimes I feel this city’s choked the life right out of me.
And it’s been so long since I’ve seen the earth, there’s concrete just as far as these two eyes can see.
    That’s why I steal these moments when I can. If I could I’d take your hand;
Slip off to the Promise Land and maybe you would see there’s still some sanity (in the Promise Land).
There’s still some sanity (in the Promise Land).
    There’s still some sanity.
