A middle of the road soft rock song. Not a power ballad but a ballad with a message, power and emotion abounding. This song was originally released on the Cd "Let Go" by my friend Ken Mercer and myself in 2001. This is one of the two songs that I sang vocals on from that CD.

    Story Behind the Song
    Ken Mercer Speaks:

My Father, Col. Howell P. Mercer, was a great soilder and provider for us. He was also an alcoholic. For years, my resentment of him ate me alive like a cancer. Through the miracle of recovery, I came to understand the pain of his life, his disease, and the wonderful things that he gave me. Without his influence, I would have never survived the years of addiction. I thank this program for turning that resentment to love. We have made peace.
The resentment I had for my father waged war on my soul from the inside out for most of my life. He came from a long line of alcoholics and I grew up as the child of an alcoholic. I can remember the commitments broken, the drunken nights, the empty days as a child and I hated him for that. I too am an alcoholic, so I could only think about me, I never sought to understand my Father. The miracle of recovery allowed me to get out of my skin and look into my Father's life in hopes of understanding him. When I learned about the horrors of his life, basically providing for his family without a Father from an early age, I realized how blessed I was. As a Father, he gave to me more than he was ever given and I am filled with gratitude. Col. Howell P. Mercer was a surviver and he taught me how to survive. I Love You Dad.

    Lyrics
Son Hold Your Head Up High

It was just five years ago to this very day I saw them lay my father in his grave.
And it felt like my life had come to an end.
So I pulled myself together and I started all over again.

The memories that he left are so dear to me.
He told me at an early age, I could be whatever I wanted to be.
And all through my life he would reassure that thought.
In every battle I encountered side by side we fought.
    He used to tell me

Son hold your head up high and walk tall like a man.
And if you take a fall get right back up.
You can do it, I know you can.

    He used to tell me
Son hold your head up high and walk tall like a man.
And if you take a fall get right back up.
You can do it, I know you can.

Now I'm rolling with the punches, living day by day.
And I try to follow his example in each and every day.
Though it seems like an eternity I long for him still.
But we are bound by our saviors blood and I know we always will.
    I can hear him say

Son hold your head up high and walk tall like a man.
And if you take a fall get right back up.
You can do it, I know you can.
You can do it, I know you can.
