A true story of the St. John's river in Florida, so wide at points you`d think it was the Mississippi, so strong in its youth it pushed aside the mighty Atlantic north of Jacksonville, so strong was its unfettered current, after flowing north, sometimes underground, from central Florida. |
CD: Greater Bigbend Sampler
Label: Unreleased
Credits: Written and performed by Ron Patrick. Rick Ott on lead guitar, Tommy Roberts on bass. |
Story Behind the Song
From an article about the St. John`s river, and its many names. All who found the river thought they found it for the first time, and named it for different reasons. That`s how folks did back then. If a creek had a grocery/trading store on it, it was called Grocery Creek. A much simpler time, right? Not really, it seems to me.
Lyrics
RIVER OF NAMES
Copyright 2000 Ron Patrick
You know, a river is one of nature`s natural wonders.
They`re majestic and pristine, but they can turn on you.
And they all have their history.
The river I`m thinkin` of certainly has its history.
It was discovered by Spaniards, Frenchmen, the Seminoles;
and they all named it their own special name.
And at one point in its history it was called The River of Names.
I AM CALLED RIVER OF NAMES BUT I AM THE MIGHTY ST. JOHN`S.
I FLOW NORTH THROUGH JACKSONVILLE AND TO THE WIDE WATER BEYOND.
(8 count)
I HAVE BEEN HERE FOREVER, LIKE MANATEE AND YELLOW FLY.
I FLOW NORTH THROUGH JACKSONVILLE AND REST WHERE THE WATER IS WIDE.
SPANIARDS FROM ST. AUGUSTINE CALLED ME RIVER OF CURRENTS;
IN FIFTEEN HUNDRED AND TWENTY ONE, THE WAY I POUNDED THEIR SURF.
BUT I AM THE MIGHTY ST. JOHN`S.
I AM NOT NO RIVER OF NAMES, NO.
I HAVE LIFE IN MY WATERS.
BUT WATCH WHERE MY COTTONMOUTHS GO.
MY SISTER WAS THE FOREST `TIL JEAN RIBAUT CAME WITH HIS AXE.
WHEN FT. SAN MATEO GOT LEVELED AND BURNED SOME FOOL NAMED ME FOR THAT.
BUT I AM THE MIGHTY ST. JOHN`S.
I AM NOT NO RIVER OF NAMES, NO.
I HAVE GHOSTS ON MY BORDERS.
NOBODY KNOWS, NOBODY KNOWS, WHAT THEY KNOW.
THEY HEARD THOSE `QUISTADORS CALL.
THEY SAW FORT CAROLINE FALL.
SEMINOLES DOWN FROM GEORGIA CALLED ME RIVER OF LAKES.
THEY LOOKED FOR MY HEADWATERS, BUT I HID WELL THE PLACE WHERE THEY LAY.
YOU SEE
I AM THE MIGHTY ST. JOHN`S.
I AM NOT NO RIVER OF NAMES, NO.
I HAVE GHOSTS ON MY BORDERS.
NOBODY KNOWS, NOBODY KNOWS, WHAT THEY KNOW.
I AM THE MIGHTY ST. JOHN`S.
I AM NOT NO RIVER OF NAMES.
