Story Behind the Song
When I was a graduate student in Austin, I had a friend named Silver Wevill, who had taught English fourth-graders in Ecuador for a couple of years. One of their assignments was to write a poem in English, and after she got all the poems from the kids, Silver printed up a little pamphlet with the poems and pictures the kids had drawn and so forth, so that the kids would have something nice to give to their parents. One day shortly after she got back from Quito, Silver showed me the pamphlet, and I was particularly struck by one poem called "The Flowers are Green," by nine-year-old Maria Gabriela Verdesoto. I decided to set it to music, and this is the result.
