Story Behind the Song
The Lord of the Rings is in five movements. This is the fifth part, "Hobbits". In this movement, a gay folk dance, the composer first sketches the carefree and optimistic character of the Hobbits. This is followed by a hymn representing the firmness and the nobility of the hobbits. The symphony finishes peacefully, in accordance with the symbolic atmosphere of the last chapter, where Frodo and Gandalf leave in a great white boat, disappearing over the horizon.
