"Fields of Athenry" | genre: Celtic | |

A slightly new arrangement of a traditional Celtic favourite. Its mournful tale of lost dreams still speaks to the lower class of today. |

Story Behind the Song
This is a duet between myself and my husband. In the Society for Creative Anachronism, we won a bardic competition for this piece, and it's one of our most requested pieces now. I love to sing with my husband, and I was very pleased when he agreed to record this one with me. The guitar and recorder arrangements were done specifically for the recording.
Lyrics
Michael: By the lonely prison wall
I heard a young girl calling
Mary: Michael, they have taken you away
For you stole Travalian's corn
So the young might see the morn
Now a prison ship lies waiting in the bay
Chorus: Lone-li are the fields of Athenry
Where once we watched the small free birds fly
Our love was on the wing
We had dreams, and songs to sing
It's so lonely 'round the fields of Athenry
Mary: By the lonely prison wall
I heard a young man calling
Michael: Nothing matters, Mary, when you're free
'gainst the famine and the Crown
I rebelled, they cuts me down
Now you must raise our child with dignity
Chorus
Mary and Michael: By the lonely harbour wall
I (She) watched the last hour falling
As the prison ship sailed out against the sky
For I'll (she'll) live and hope and pray
For my (her) love in Botany Bay
It's so lonely 'round the fields of Athenry
Chorus
Mary: It's so lonely 'round the fields of Athenry
