Story Behind the Song
The "Blue Song" is essentially a love song written for a guitar (in this case, Iris, Chris O'Brien's blue Taylor acoustic). Chris actually began writing the song after putting the instrument on layaway at a Twin Cities music store because it cost more money than he had to his name.
The lyrics to the song suggest that holding on to past obsessions and refusing to change is an infinite source of unhappiness. Even in a world filled with opportunity and wonder, failing to accept the past will always leave you feeling blue.
Of all the songs on the album, "Worlds That We Might See," this track was the most time-consuming to record. Originally, all the instrumental parts were recorded separately, but the band opted to re-record the song live in the studio in order to capture a more organic feel.
Lyrics
Try as I might, I can't erase this blinding flash from my mind
Your life seems to speak to me through distance, through difference, through time
Many years from now, I can't foresee regaining any stride without that vision handed down to me one blue night
So look around you, so astounded by the worlds that we might see
Time to change, climb this chain, pull the heavens within reach
Time to drink up every color, finally true, but all I taste is blue
Tumbling down, this wait for something, maybe nothing, maybe more
Too wary of this promise, only time can say for sure
I can feel the window shatter, giving in to piece of mind, but this bold anticipation we cannot deny
So look around you, so astounded by the worlds that we might see
Time to change, climb this chain, pull the heavens within reach
Time to drink up every color, finally true, but all I taste is blue for now
