Story Behind the Song
This song was written for a friend of mine, Steve Kuchle, about 16 years ago. At that time he was 80, and had just suffered his third heart attack. His eyes had resignation in them, and I couldn't bear to see this man who had been such an inspiration to me just give up and "go gently into that goodnight."
So, I recorded this initially "live to two track" and took it over to his house and played it for him.
He cried.
He looked at me with a tear-stained face and with a tembling voice he said, "I have lived for 80 years on this earth and nobody has ever written me a story, or a poem, or a song."
He clasped the cassette to his chest, and went into his private chambers, still weeping. (By this time I was weeping too).
I never again saw him with resignation in his eyes, and while I do not know if he is still on the temporal plane today, I do know that he was alive ten years ago; so I Praise God for allowing me to use one of His given gifts to lift up one of His weary soldiers. - Jesse.
Lyrics
I don't like "Goodbye's"
Especially in old eyes
Speaking resignation
Weariness and pain
Don't you feel you could hang on
Sing us maybe one more song
And rally to the music once again
CHORUS:
Old eyes
See ribbons in the moonlight
Old eyes
Watch seasons from the park
They see kindness when we're cruel
And wisdom from a fool
And sunshine
In the middle of the dark
I see something new
Coming over you
And it looks too much like
You are giving in
And if you'd let me choose
I'd say you have too much to lose
Yet I know life is a game
You just can't win
CHORUS:
Old Eyes
See ribbons in the moonlight
Old Eyes
Watch seasons from the park
They see kindness when we're cruel
And wisdom from a fool
And sunshine
In the middle of the dark
Must you leave me now
I guess I thought somehow
You'd find a way
To break off nature's chains
Please don't end your song
I just learned to sing along...
Through the silent dark
The music will remain
CHORUS:
Old eyes
See ribbons in the moonlight
Old eyes
Watch seasons from the park
They see kindness when we're cruel
And wisdom from a fool
And sunshine
In the middle of the dark
And sunshine
In the middle of the dark
