Story Behind the Song
I wrote this song about my adoptive father, Walter J. McHarg, who passed away in 1988. He was a great role model to me of what the love of our Heavenly Father is like. Thus the correlation in the lyrics between my relationship with my dad, and my relationship with God.
Lyrics
LIKE A CHILD
Verse 1
I remember when I was a little child upon my daddy's knee.
He would shower me with love and say, "My child, you're precious to me!"
He'd tell me I was beautiful and that I brightened up his world,
And nothing in life meant more to me than being Daddy's little girl.
Verse 2
Through time as I got older, a wall began to form.
The cares of life surrounded me, and from my Daddy I was torn.
I was trying to prove I was all grown up, that I could live life on my own,
But deep inside my heart of hearts, I wanted to run home!
CHORUS
Like a child, I will run to You, I will run into Your arms.
I will rest within Your love for me, at peace and safe from harm.
Like a Father, You will hold me tight, for You take delight in me.
You will quiet me with Your song of love.
Like a child in Daddy's arms, I'll rest within the love You have for me.
Verse 3
Though many years have come and gone, and my Daddy has gone home,
Inside I'm still like that little child, I can't live my life alone.
But there's a Father up in Heaven who is always there for me,
And safe within His warm embrace is where I long to be!
(repeat CHORUS)
