Story Behind the Song
Someone had just broke up with me and this song was a product of that. During the writing of it, I realized that I wouldn't let pain keep me from giving a relationship every possible chance. Thus, the ending to the song. In the past, trying to ease the pain won out over keeping the relationship, hence, my divorce after over 18 years. A break-up doesn't "hurt me to the core" any more, because my core is not based on a relationship with another person, it is based on a relationship with Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ. I can count on that relationship being unchanging. I think it makes it possible for me to give more to my relationships with other people.

EVERY TIME WE BREAK UP

Every time we break up,
It seems to get easier.
Every time we break up,
And you go walking out that door.
Every time we break up,
It seems to get easier.
But I don't want to break up anymore.
I'm not unhappy to the point
That I think I'll never recover.
I'm not unhappy to the point
That I hurt clear to my core.
I'm not unhappy to the point
That I think I'll never recover.
But I don't want to break up anymore.
Every time there was a chance,
I opened up my heart.
Every time there was a chance,
I flung open that door.
Every time there was a chance,
I opened up my heart.
But I don't want to break up anymore.
Can't control what you do,
Or how long you'll stay.
Can't control what you do,
Never know what's in store.
Can't control what you do,
Or how long you'll stay.
So, I'm not saying hello anymore.
Maybe to you it's just a game,
You feel no pain.
Maybe to you it's just a game,
You like the revolving door.
Maybe to you it's just a game,
You feel no pain
But I don't want to break up anymore.
Who am I kidding? If you,
Made the first move.
Who am I kidding? If you,
Flung open that door.
Who am I kidding? If you,
Made the first move.
I'd take a chance on you once more.
Before you judge what I said,
Know where I come from.
Before you judge what I said,
Listen to me I implore.
I lost the prize once, because
I didn't finish the race.
I fear the pain less, want the prize much more.
Every time we break up,
It seems to get easier.
Every time we break up,
And you go walking out that door.
I'm glad when we break up,
It seems to get easier.
'Cause I'd take a chance on you once more
First Verse - substituting the following for the last line:
I'd take a chance on you once more.
