Story Behind the Song
This is an ethanol inspired song, with lyrics written on a cocktail napkin at a dancer bar and music set to a simple melody that had been playing around in my head.
I wrote this song around 1978, the second or third song that I wrote. The words evolved over the years, a tradition in folk music. The last line, the "hook", was written in preparation for recording the "Reality Bends" CD in January 2002.
Lyrics
Took my ease with an old friend, and we went to kill the pain,
Starlight was blinking a welcome, we came to drink some grain.
She was a dark and a foxy gypsy, a smile that's sure to please.
Dancing girl who knows her business, I came for a few, I don't want to leave.
An she's a dancing girl, the Starlight's pearl,
and she does it 'cause she digs it, yea.
And how they tip her most generously.
Dancing girl's got a lot of things with which she must contend,
Cold drafts, well aimed passes, and drunkards stinking of gin.
Dancing girl comes by my table, says "You mind if I sit here, please?"
I say sure darling, you want my coat to warm your knees?
I lay a line on her, I say: "What's a nice girl like you doing in a place like this?
She said, "No, I don't need a ride home, but thank you honey, you're the best."
The dancing girl, she aint got no husband, she likes to go it alone,
Just like her mother, she grew up on the road.
The dancing girl, she don't know her daddy, he was wounded in the war.
She don't like her mother's boyfriend,
'cause he slaps her and he calls her a whore.
Yea, she's a dancing girl, the Starlight's pearl,
an she does it 'cause she digs it, yea.
And how they tip her most generously.
And if I was a knight in armor, I'd take the dancing girl away,
to the land of milk and honey, where the streets are safe to play.
But here at the bar, I'm just a dude, if I stare too much she'll think I'm rude,
And what she needs is a couple of bucks,
not some drunken guy in a pick-up truck.
She's a dancing girl, the Starlight's pearl,
an she does it 'cause she digs it, yea.
And how they tip her most generously.
She's a dancing girl, the Starlight's pearl, she does it 'cause she digs it, yea, yea.
And her money's tax free.
