Story Behind the Song
I was a peace corps volunteer in Tchad, Africa and heard this story and its variations. I also heard similar tales in Mexico, Mozambique and Norway as well. Out side the village is another, malevolent universe populated by creatures who prey on the innocent, particularly children. Are the tales true, or just to scare kids into obedience and wariness?
Lyrics
Changeling Lions
DK Grant, July 12, 2002
C
When I was young,
The lions would come
F C
At dawn to the edge of the fields
C
My father would say
F
Son, don’t you stray
G C
Lest the changelings take you away
G C
Lest the changelings take you away
Am C
It’s an ancient legend
Told around the world
Am
Curious Strangers
C
Talk to boys and girls
C F
Offer you candy
G
Take your hand
F
Then you vanish
G C
With the dust of the Harmattan
We pay the River People,
The Kotoko
For the right of passage
To the other shore
We are so frightened
We pay what we owe
They’re crocodiles
Who’ll eat us whole
C F
From desert, jungle
C
To the Great Outback
C
City sidewalk,
F G
Suburban cul-de-sac
G F
The Shadow People
F C
From the Other Side
C F
Are here and hungry
F G C
Won’t leave till satisfied
When I was young
The lions did come
At twilight to the edge of the fields
I didn’t obey
I wanted to stay
With the boy who bid me to play
But my father grabbed me away
My father saved me that day
From his arms I saw a lion saunter away
