I met griots as a Peace Corps volunteer. Woody, Pete, Ledbelly, they were American griots. Historian, commentator, advocate and teacher, more than entertainers isn't that what Griots are? | MP3.com CD: Griot - buy it!

Story Behind the Song
The song has been percolating for almost a year. But this is as close as I have been able to come to it.
I wanted to tell the story, the risk and value of the griot, who is teacher, story teller, historian, politician, poet and often soldier. I dared as well to be arrogant enough to pick up the mantle myself.
Lyrics
The Griot
David Kendall Grant

C
The Griot tells his story
Am
Tales of long ago
G
Heroes and bravery
G-
Love and woe
He’s the living legacy
The guardian of the past
Sifting through history
For truth along the path
Chorus
Dm Am
Now who will paint the picture?
Dm Am
Of all that’s come to be
F7 G-
I guess, the only answer
F7 C
Is the Griot who lives in me
There’s hope in his persuading
His gentle entertaining
That when you sit and listen
You’ll get up and act
His life is not a factor
His voice only the vector
But he knows that his feelings
Are caught up in the facts
Chorus
Break
A F7 A
But when the men with guns appear
A F7 A
His is the voice they fear
C
Living like a gypsy
G
They’ve got to hunt him down
C
Oh Lorca, Lennon, Saro-wiwa
G
Your blood blessed hallowed ground
Final Chorus
So let us paint a mural
Of life and love and peace
Yes we have the answer
In the Griot, you and me
